Toni Mejias

Prince George's County

My career spans 25+ years in various industries with a background in finance, account management, public relations, and currently in education, as an education support professional.  I have been working in Maryland’s largest school district the last 17 years. I have held several positions including principal’s secretary/bookkeeper and inventory control/budget analyst for the Title I federal grants office.  In the last four years, I have been assisting the Office of Equity & Inclusion in creating inclusive environments, fostering student achievement, and diversifying the workforce. I have also managed the fiscal and administrative supports of the department, co-facilitated, coordinated, and organized internal and external culturally responsive and equity-driven workshops and events.

I became active in union life in 2014.  At the local level, I sat on my local’s executive board, and joined the contract negotiations advisory committee. At the state level, I graduated from the Emerging Leaders Academy, was appointed to a Leading the Profession subgroup, and served two terms on the Minority Affairs Committee.  Finally, at the national level, I graduated from NEA’s 2014 MLT/WLT, graduated from the NEA ESP Leaders for Tomorrow program, served as Treasurer for the NEA Hispanic Caucus, served on the Ethnic Minority Affairs Committee, and attended the Trainer-of-Trainers for MLT/WLT.

I believe in protecting the rights of my members, advocating for them, educating them, and guiding them so they can become our future leaders. I have two callings:

1.  To serve our students and their families. Know who they are, understand their culture and their struggles, and care enough to help them navigate and succeed.

2.   To be a voice and serve my members at the local, state, and national level, working alongside the president, officers, and directors. To always be present and available when called upon.
