January 12, 2012, Annapolis, MD…Maryland’s educators reacted with pride and satisfaction to today’s announcement that Education Week magazine has ranked Maryland’s public schools #1 in the nation for the fourth consecutive year. Maryland received high rankings on a range of measures, including K-12 achievement, school finance, and teacher quality, accountability, and support.

“In Maryland, the success of our students remains our number one priority whether our economy is thriving or recovering,” said Clara Floyd, president of the Maryland State Education Association. “We all must do our part to provide a great public school for every child, and I am proud of our educators, parents, and community leaders who have worked as a team to achieve the results we are celebrating today. I am also deeply appreciative of the historic investment in our schools that so many of our elected officials have championed. But to continue to move our top-ranked schools forward, it is imperative that we work together to repair Maryland’s broken maintenance of effort law and safeguard the local school funding that is essential to our students’ success and our status as a national leader in education.”
